PÃTHRA – The Journey of the Character Dancer

PÃTHRA – The Journey of the Character Dancer is a contemporary intercultural dance production developed through practice-led research, exploring the process through which a dancer transforms into an embodied character within performance. Rooted in Sri Lankan traditional movement systems—particularly Kandyan dance and Mudra Natya—the production investigates the relationship between body, character, memory, emotion, and narrative through choreographic exploration.

The word Pãthra signifies a “character,” “vessel,” or “bearer,” symbolising the dancer as a carrier of emotion, story, cultural memory, and human experience. The production examines how a performer moves beyond technical execution to inhabit psychological depth, emotional intention, and narrative presence through embodiment and movement research.

Created through a collaborative exchange between Salamba Performing Arts Centre (SPAC), Sri Lanka, and Dance in Art (DiA), The Netherlands, the work brings together Sri Lankan and Dutch dancers within an intercultural choreographic research environment. Through studio-based experimentation, improvisation, somatic practice, dramaturgical inquiry, and ritual-inspired movement, the dancers collectively explore transformation, identity, conflict, memory, and the inner landscape of the performer.
